6 ChatGPT prompts to take the WTF out of email marketing

I don’t watch movies. This is difficult for the people in my life to understand.

BUT WHAT ABOUT DIRTY DANCING, they cry.

JUST ADD ‘THE CASTLE’ TO YOUR LIST.

‘Sure,’ I always reply, with @curseoffeeling’s classic (to me) tweet echoing in my head:

There is no list because I don’t watch movies

So when I was thinking of a subject line for this blog post, I thought opening with a movie reference might work (spoiler: I lost interest in this idea because I don’t watch movies).

Enter ChatGPT—an AI model that engages in conversational interaction. It was designed to generate human-like writing based on a given prompt. You can learn more here. In my industry, people are either freaking the hell out or loudly proclaiming its limitations.

I’m a professional writer (squeeeee! That phrase still makes me giddy 🥰) and I am not worried that ChatGPT is going to put me out of a job. In fact, I use it regularly as a research tool. And one thing I’ve learned is this: ChatGPT is all about the prompts.

Like anything in life, the way you ask matters. And if you ask the right way, it can be an incredibly powerful tool for any kind of writing—even email marketing.

6 ChatGPT prompts to take the WTF out of email marketing

Since I love you and want you to be happy, I’ve pulled a bit of a list together. This is by no means exhaustive—just a few ideas to get you started.

  1. Generate an outline for an email welcome sequence for * insert your industry *

  2. Please give me a list of catchy subject lines for an email about * insert topic *

  3. What’s the best way to format an email about * your topic *?

  4. Generate a list of subject lines for an email series on * topic *

  5. Create a list of calls to action (CTAs) to book a call (or whatever you want your people to do)

  6. Please give me a list of 12 months worth of email topics for a * your title/industry *

Proceed with caution

ChatGPT is not—I repeat—NOT a copy and paste situation. The actual writing is very meh and not human-sounding at all. But it’s an amazing starting point for those days when you need to write a thing and are maybe feeling a bit out of your depth.
