10 things I hate about business podcasts

I think we can all agree that podcasts are the bomb. When I was first starting out, I devoured every episode of Hot Copy and now I’m a huge fan of Business Badassery with Amy Posner and Kirsty Fanton.

But I think we can also agree that *some business pods are a bit…much? To that end,

Here are 10 things I hate about business podcasts

Marathon episodes

Unless you’re giving me the ins and outs of a messed up sex cult, I don’t have time for a two hour episode. When it comes to business podcasts, I like’em medium-length and to-the-point.

Inconsistent volume levels

If the sound is all over the place, it can be really distracting (although now I have much more appreciation for how tricky consistent sound quality can be!)

Sales overload

I’m all for supporting fellow business owners, but if the first ten mins of the podcast is promotional content, I’m gonna peace out faster than you can say ‘shameless self-promotion.’

Dull guests

This isn’t as big a deal as a dull host—but if your guests make oatmeal look spicy, I’m likely to get itchy feet.

Lack of practical tips

Actionable tips or BUST, people.

Tech troubles

Technology is hard, y’all. And I definitely have a threshold for tech blunders, but if consistent issues interfere with the message—I’m out.

Scripted content

For the love of authenticity, can we move past canned, picture perfect content and embrace the roller coaster of business ownership?

Unrelatable hosts

If your host is stuffy or unapproachable, I’m gonna feel more out of place than a unicorn at a cattle ranch. Bring the clever, funny, relatability, pleaseandthankyou.

Lack of diversity

Business owners are a diverse lot. They come in all shapes, sizes, neurotypes, backgrounds, and gender identities—and I’m all about podcasts that reflect the diversity that I see in the world.

Knock the hustle

Hustle culture is a patriarchal construct and a one-way ticket to burnout. If that’s your jam, that’s your business…but I’ll pass.

Are you on board? If yah, check out The One That Works For You wherever you get your podcasts.
